Lombard Odier
Increases time-to-market and achieves IT compliance by deploying with Nolio. Founded in Geneva in 1796, Lombard Odier is one of the largest private bankers in Europe, specializing in asset management and estate planning.
We talked with Technical Architect Yann Albou on how Lombard Odier is adopting Nolio's innovative technologies to accelerate its time to production while ensuring IT governance and compliance.
NOLIO: Why did you start seeking solutions to automate Lombard Odier's application release processes?
LOMBARD ODIER: A dedicated Middleware team was originally in charge of provisioning servers manually and with internal scripts. This was very time-consuming, extremely hard to maintain and difficult to audit.
NOLIO: What were the specific challenges that your developers encountered?
LOMBARD ODIER: We have approximately 20 to 30 application deployments a week and there are manifold complexities with every release. Every application deployment requires multi-tier updates, dynamic amendments of application property files, modifications of xml files and system updates.
As a result, deployments for complex applications can take up to two hours each. We need to significantly reduce this time in order to keep up with business demands and maintain agility in the development group.
Yann Albou, Technical Architect at Lombard Odier
NOLIO: How are you using Nolio to achieve this goal?
LOMBARD ODIER: We started implementing Nolio ASAP about six months ago in the continuous integration environment and now, instead of developers and Middleware team manually provisioning servers, Nolio does it for us. It takes just a few clicks to build a new integration environment and get the application installed and configured. It is very quick and straightforward.
Right now we are working on Nolio processes to move from WebLogic to JBoss middleware. The goal is to use the same deployment processes for all our environments (integration, pre-production and production). Ultimately, we intend to use the same Nolio process across the entire application life cycle.
NOLIO: Who is involved in the release processes today?
LOMBARD ODIER: We currently have five to six people deploying applications for all Middleware environments. Each person is responsible for part of the application but, to ensure we always have a back-up, each person must understand every aspect of the process. Simple updates take around 30 minutes but complex applications can take up to two hours.

NOLIO: How have Nolio's application release solutions helped your release processes?
LOMBARD ODIER: With Nolio we are able to monitor precise details, figures and measurements of each deployment, including specifics on the changes made, dates and times of releases and success rates. As private bankers, security is our top concern and it is vital that we have this transparency.
Our time to production is also extremely important. We've dramatically reduced our release times by using Nolio's automated solutions. We are confident that by running Nolio across all our environments, we will reduce times for complicated deployments from two hours to twenty minutes. This will enable us to maintain our competitive edge and reduce operational costs without compromising security.
